The Long Count the sixth element. By John R. Holsen
After reading some detail history of the confusion regarding the long count, I would
like to contribute to this discussion. One mystery is whether the long count fifth degree
is intended to turn over like a odometer after only 13 counts, or the full expected 20.
It turns out that the Mayans were forced into a long count style clock so that their
observation data subsets remained synchronized with sidereal time, and not just solar time.
To summarize the article that follows, sidereal long count ends at (9 19 19 19 17 19 )+1
To get the recognition so that +1 day = 10 0 0 0 0 0 could require that some university
grant me at an honorary PHD or invite me to speak after reading this, about this (my) philosophy.
This date is 71,000 solar years from august 11, 3114 BC. 71,000/394.26 = 180 bactun.
Math Geeks, note that 144000 mayan days /365.24 solar days = 394.26 approximately.
The simple way to count to 180 bactun in odometer style would be 14 14 360.
If the Mayans taught us anything about knowledge, it is that sometimes, simple is not practical.
In the past mystic authors and researchers assumed that 13 would be a new era.
That is, you would never really get 13 in that place, but only 12. The 13 would mean that
the long count system was over somehow. Yet, legends have been interjected that
there would be a kind of end at the beginning? of 13 bactun. (13 completed sets of 144,000 days).
This is contradicted by stelae and carvings showing 13 as the 5th placeholder, and
one list that shows a 1 in the 6th place and 5 zeros after that : 184.108.40.206.0.0.
Was a month of 24 days per Uinal_14, 4 days off lunar cyclics, used instead of 20-Unial_18?
That is a convenient error if you need to know where the moon will be and when in 28 days.
This is because there are 7 sky time/positions (28/4). That's six considering new moons.
We will discuss this in context of the historic 28 day per Month_13, with respect to culture.
The current literature requires only 18 division of 20 days per Tun (Year approx).
It had occurred to everyone for many years that 5 times a complete set of 13 bactun
is about 25626 years and that is near enough to the precession cycle of the Earth’s poles.
That number of years for a precessionary season is not exactly known even today,
but thought to be about 25,700 years. This is 5140 times 5.00 ; The source of the so-called
"5140 YEAR OLD" Mayan calander- really 5125.25 years. The precessional season shift 20500
years is exactly 4.00 times 5125 - 13 bactun, so each source of axis shift closely matches
the respective precession type of Earth's poles, so 4 or 5 'Long Counts' matches to celestial time.
But why not tell the facts - that the cycles of 13 bactun don't equal the Earth's cycle time of the
Milankovitch Cycles two AND three combined, the combined movement eliptical of the planet.
The craze began in the 1960's with some researchers saying a disaster could take place.
If fact, the only basis for this was in a questionable origin paper document called the Popol Vu.
It stated that the previous age of creation ended in a disaster after 13 bactun.
While the Popol Vuh is dated well after the first Spanish robbed and burned
the other documents, and the gods and other events named are not historic, nobody seemed
to question these scientific reports. That suspicious document says that no more destruction
will occur, however, now that man has learned to worship the one true god, as described
in a story in which the god helps out mankind, but mankind plots to kill him.
God resolves this by letting man believe in his death for three days, then rising from a tunnel.
If that scenario was not suspicious enough, then the virtual takeover in the year 100 BC
of the Olmec culture of the Yucatan area and others would tend to discount the validity
of this kind of religious belief system as well, because most Maya came under the
economic and political, if not cultural, control of the northern Olmec and southern Aztec.
What makes more sense is that the MAYA were aware of the 365 day year, and avoided using it
in their higher cultured inscriptions. Their focus was strictly astronomical, not seasonal, as large
errors would accumulate using such a long count and a 360 day year instead of 365.
If we take 20 baktun of 394.25 solar years (20 times 400 Mayan) we arrive at 7885
actual solar years in a Pictun (20 backtun).The: (five times thirteen bactun)
divided by 20 bactun is a ratio of precessional to the completion of a season equal to PI bactuns.
That is, if previously we thought that 5 bactun was somehow mysterious because it is
equal to 1 precessional season, we should be impressed that the ratio of 1 one 20x Pictun
is equal to the number PI.
The 'error' should consider that precession of the axis is not circular, but elyptic.
25626 = (7885*3.25) So, how eliptical does the extra 0.11 make it?
The Long Count - Part Two. The eliptic property calculation.
Well, even before we begin we might notice that the difference of the major and minor semi-axes
is 21.385 km (13 mi). This is 0.335% of the major axis. That much is not apparent to the eye.
But the error of precession from perfect is ten times this amount 3.4 percent.
This 3% is also approximately equal to the three percent orbital difference of distances to the sun.
As the Earth rotates, its axis shifts between 21.5 and 24.5 degrees in 20,500 years.
This is the Milankovitch Cycle number two, with the third being precession.
But it's the third cycle, or precession that determines where seasons occur in Earth's orbit.
Every 5250 years, (5125+125 years) Summer changes from mid span of the long elipse axis to
the nearest point to the sun, and in another two times 5250 years to the point farthest from the sun.
This may explain why the Maya did not want calendars that tied tempertures to any month.
If you need to make observations consistently from records of month and year, it doesn't work.
At Dec 21, 2012, the perihelion (nearest) and the maximum tilt of the Earth's axis toward the sun
(winter solstice) is coincident. The formation of ices ages and glaciers is controlled by this
relationship and other weather. When the axis is tilted towards Vega, positions on the orbit
will coincide with the winter being farthest (aphelion and perihelion), the opposite of Dec. 2012.
This means the Northern Hemisphere experiences greater seasonal contrasts.
If anything, at the end of 13 bactun, Mayas should predict fair weather and peace on Earth.
While good seasons lie ahead, in another Pictun (20 bactun) another ice age will be upon us.
The tilt is a seperate motion going on at the same time as the precessoin of the Earth's axis.
The tilt is nearing its average, caused by the 71,000 year orbital precession, not the axial rotation.
The tilt has a completed cycle of 41,000 years. 41000 is 5.2 complete Pictun (of 20 bactun each).
But that 41000 is 8.00 cycles of 13 bactun.
Taken in conjunction with the 26000-year spin-axis precession, the 71000-year orbit precession
causes a 41000-year oscillation in the tilt of the Earths axis, about plus or minus 1.3 degrees from
its average value of 23.3 degrees.
Now, I started to say that the tilt has a completed cycle of 41,000 years.
However, it is exatly 8 complete pictun of 13 bactun each. This is unfortunate because it means
that the Maya may have used the term 13 bactun in context - like we use 12 hours of the clock.
It also implies that inscribed dates that begin with 13 bactun could mean the 13 is used as the start
of each Pictun, counting up to 20 and then turning around and beginning at one to total 20 bactun.
The most likely assumption is that there were conflicting observations or data sets. Scientists today
agree only that the transport mechanics are what matter in forming ice ages. The total amount of
energy reaching the Earth remains the same, although more or less goes to each polar region.
The error or 3.44 percent in the long count as a match to Earth's axis nearly round axis precession
is not an error that is easily justified or rejected. It's just expected and approximately correct.
That pesky problem of conflicting data sources appears to have a celestial source however.
While many of the proposals that claim a connection with overseas Egyptian culture have been
sacrificed on the liberal arts alter of being able to provide observations called 'facts' to back
up assertions, I will nevertheless tell HERE tell the reality within which truth lies -
that observers of Egypt observed similar epochs.
That 71,000 year cycle turns out to be the square of the factor which converts Mayan time
into the Egyptian solar calander. That is, the curious 360 day solar Mayan year does in fact
fit into the actual solar cycle, but it is based upon the opoch of the Egyptians of 1460 years.
The celectial basis of a 1460 year cycle is taken from observing the star Sirius which rises
every 1460 years in line with the Sun's rising. Because the Sun God in Egypt was important
the Egyptian year began at that time, about the time of the yearly rise of the Nile River also.
The Egyptians knew that it took this very long cycle to complete, but did the Mayans know?.
The answer will surprise you. If you take 71000 years and divide it by 14.04 you get 5,057.
The 5,057 years divided a second time by 14.04 gives the incredible 360.2 day Mayan year.
Thus twice the 14.04 constant could be used to track a 28 day lunar cyclic, but not thought of
in context as the more commonly recorded time, which was recordable time - long counts.
However there is a problem here - using 28 days instead of 29.5 lunar cyclic requires an
adjustment to how the yearly calander must be synchronized to the sky.
The so-called '13 Moon calendar' synchronizes solar and galactic cycles on July 26
correlating with the star Sirius. 29.5-day synodic cycle of the moon (new moon to new) and
the 27.1-day sidereal cycle of the moon results in a 28 day on average cycle time. This is only
if the year begins and ends not on Jan 1 but July 26. Then 13 months of 28 equals a 364 year.
This is the time of the so-called Heliacal Sirius Rising - Sirius disappears then rises
before dawn in front of the Sun. Maybe 'the eye of Mehen' that assists Osiris re-incarnated.
Could the real questions that we should be asking ourselves is if we read more or less into data
than is best for the proper establishment of meaningful cultural transfer or just our traditions.
For a society that had no oral traditional transfer, legends or legacies other than what was kept
in writing we can learn a lot from them, even if it comes from carvings and possible overcarvings
scrutinized by a few seldom read authors who are willing to give older long fogotten thoughts an
equal chance to be heard.========================================================================

- My Conclusions. From the Predictions to the Technicals.
It appears that the Mayans did have beliefs that included building in terraces to
manufacture an environment that is both enchanted and safe.
It also seems that 2012 is ONLY clearly associated with the 'Return Of The Nine'. In our
culture, the nine countries that currently have nuclear weapons. The catastrophy theory source.
But, because the rock carving is broken after 'the nine' we don't know. It could be
99 bottles of beer on the pylon, 99% monkey DNA (RH?)in humans, 9 legged scorpions, spiders.
The common interpretation is 9 gods returning, but that is what sells pseudo science books too.
Based on Mayan numerology, the nine could be Nine Pictun with the usual 20 bactun (180 bactun).
The greatest mystery of all ancient world's culture is how the megaliths of 1100 ton were
moved. While I have looked at many theories, only one has real world physics behind it.
That fact may be due to the origin. I thought out this possible and likely method myself.
In my personal engineering version of this, the megalith is jacked onto a seris of beams.
This structure has the same effect of decreasing force per square unit of area on the soil.
It's not beyond modern ability to do this and overcome inertial resistance by half or more.
What most theorists do not realize is that sliding the weight is not the bottleneck barrier.
The problem is nearly all about overcoming the per surface unit force and 'CF'; Coefficients
of friction. The latter is a function of the surface smoothness and materials in contact.
It is much harder to begin movement of a large mass than to continue it's progress.
Briefly, the largest stones like the Trilithons of Lebanon were floated onto a raft at the quarry.
They could have been taken to a deep sea or post-eartquake crack that had filled with water.
Submerged to extreme depths their size compressed but their boyancy/weight unchanged.
They then expanded upon retrieval making their per square inch pressure to ground less.
Lastly they were placed with their ends fastned together so they shrank together.
The expanded state allowed easier surface working and sizing. Heat/steam and
any residual seawater diffused into the surface softened and reacted to heat.
Their configuration backs this up. With the Nile causeway megaliths, the Nile river
ran or was redirected in front of the Great Sphinx. They did not have to be dragged far.
It takes tens of thousands of years however for the Nile to shift naturally to its present position.
The megaliths of Lebanon found in the quarry are 55 percent larger not because they were
left behind, but because they may have started out from the quarry that way.
The nile shift could have been engineered as well, if you redirect the nile far upstream.
Not to be critical, but conditions in Egypt have deteriorated over the years so that
reading this discussion on hastyface.com is as close to the old style adventurism that
you and your children will likely ever be able to experience, at least without high risk.
